Why  do historians label the events which took place in the  14th and 15th centuries- the Renaissance?

Why was Italy at the center of this reawakening of Europe?

What  factors precipitated a flourishing of the arts and  culture at this point in time? (consider economic developments)

What did the European rebirth in the 14th and 15th centuries have to do with a rediscovery of Roman and Greek writings?

How  was  the  European  rebirth in  the  14th,  15th,  and  16th centuries  related to recovery after the terrible period of  the Black Death?

Why  is  the  invention  of  the  printing  press  an   important development?  (In this regard, to what extent was the  population literate at this time? )

What  are  the relations between the Renaissance and the  Age  of Discovery?

A flourishing of the arts was accompanied by development of trade and commerce. Describe economic advancement in the 14th and  15th centuries! (page 328)

Describe  the growth of universities in this period. Why is  this important?

Consider  the  Artistic Renaissance. What  great  accomplishments were  made  in the arts? How did the quality and  nature  of  art change during this time period?

Film: The Mission

To what extent was Spanish colonization in the New World modeled after the "Reconquista" at home?

What  was  the  Spanish  attitude  toward  the  Indians   (native inhabitants)?  How  might  one contrast  that  with  the  English attitude?

Why was slavery made an intricate part of the colonial economy?

What  was  the black legend? Why did the  English  circulate  the Black  Legend  and  to  what  did  they  hope  to  gain  by   its propagation?

In  the film, The Mission, what is the attitude of  the  colonial governments toward the native population?

Who were the Jesuits? What was their "mission"?

How did Spanish colonization of the New World differ from English colonization of the New World?


The Protestant Revolution

What accounts for the rise of Protestantism in the 16th  century?

Put  another way: why were Europeans, particularly  in  Northern Europe dissatisfied with the practices of the Catholic Church?

Can   one  view  Northern  European  monarchs'   acceptance   of Protestantism  as  simply opportunistic? For example,  isn't  it really true that:

a. Henry VIII wanted to divorce a number of his wife and coveted church lands

b. The German monarchs wished to replace loyalty to the Pope with loyalty to their local despotic governments

c. The wealthy resented the Catholic Church's limitations upon new economic ordering

d. Monarchs disliked Church interference in internal and international affairs
