Sumi-e

Sumi-e, or Japanese brush and ink painting in many ways is similar to haiku. A few deft strokes convey a rich pattern and organization. In fact, there is a haiku accompanying the painting below. It is translated as follows

If there were a voice
The man might be awakened.
Flying butterfly
